No matter how many times we hear the Nativity story, it never loses its beauty nor does it fail to evoke a sense of wonder. With only stable animals to bear witness, the Son of God entered our world in humility, inviting all who would seek Him to come and behold the light that no darkness can overcome.
Among the first to answer that invitation were the Magi – Gentiles, who set out on a journey guided only by trust and a star. They traveled far, carrying not what was convenient, but what was worthy. Their gifts were not selected hastily or out of obligation. They were chosen with reverence, offered with love and placed before the Child who was both newborn and eternal. The Magi teach us that true giving begins in wonder. Before they opened their treasures, they opened their hearts in adoration.
Their journey encourages us to look again at the manger with the same awe. It reminds us that every encounter with Christ invites a response. For the Magi, that response was to give their very best. For us, it may take many forms: time in prayer, acts of mercy, the sharing of our blessings so that His work may continue in our communities.
As the year ends, may we imitate their spirit. Not simply giving because the season asks it of us, but giving because our hearts have knelt before the mystery of God made flesh. May the Child of Bethlehem draw us closer to His light and fill us with the joy that moved the Magi to honor a baby with treasures that revealed Him as King, God and Savior.
